HIV Anonymous A Global Network
Introduction: HIV Anonymous is a new 501(C)(3) non-profit corporation that offers unbiased support to people infected with, affected by, or at risk for HIV/AIDS. We are an autonomous self-supporting organization that provides peer support that helps reduce high-risk behavior by its members and provides emotional support to enhance spiritual, mental, and physical well-being. Purpose: This presentation is to advance the awareness of HIV Anonymous and its potential to harness unbridled behavior and transfer it into a positive awareness through peer support, sponsor/mentor relations, and our 12-Step workbook HIV Anonymous Positive Attitudes.
We would like to inform those attending the conference that we have compiled meeting starter packs that include HIV Anonymous Positive Attitudes workbooks, guidelines on how to run meetings and start groups, and 21 different pamphlets and brochures on HIV and HIV related issues.
Learning Objectives: By the end of the presentation, participants will:
1. Know how HIV Anonymous will eventually be self-supporting and autonomous.
2. Know why HIV Anonymous will be especially successful in prevention and treatment programs for substance-abusing men and women of all races, creeds, and sexual orientation.
3. Know how HIV Anonymous will provide a virtually hands-free support network for clinics and HIV/AIDS-related programs that will provide assistance for individuals infected with, affected by, or at risk for HIV.
4. Know the basic structure of HIV Anonymous' World Service Organization.
5. Understand how our website, face-to-face meetings, on-line meetings, workshops, and our Hot Line will integrate and be advantageous to our battle in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Background: HIV Anonymous was modeled after its predecessor, Alcoholics Anonymous. We have, however, modified the 12 Steps and the 12 Traditions to meet the unique needs of everyone infected with, affected by, or at risk for HIV.
These modifications have achieved an impressive outcome concerning our ability to apply for grants and accept donations, in addition to the freedom to utilize press, radio, television, and film to carry our message.
Our Mission: To bring together HIV support groups, patients, and organizations that serve people with HIV to work towards the common goal of unity, education, support, and spiritual awareness. By linking resources, we are creating a centralized community as well as the largest network for support ever. HIV Anonymous offers administrators and front-line workers promising advances in their clients' development and well-being though peer support with little or no expense to the facility.
HIV Anonymous is designed to integrate substance abuse treatment, mental health treatment, risk reduction/prevention, and make HIV-related information readily available in one program.
Presentation Description: This presentation will discuss the evolution of HIV Anonymous from its predecessor, Alcoholics Anonymous. We will focus on the specific needs of those infected with, affected by, or at risk for HIV and the roles they played in the development of our program.
Conclusions: Specifically, the presentation will address the functions of the HIV Anonymous World Service Organization (HIVAWSO) and the services it will provide including cultural relevance, spirituality, and re-engagement in a diverse community.
